The "Little Railroad That Could" continues to thrive today. I live within walking distance to some of the line, around the former Bendix Plant, and love to photograph them.
Left: March 18, 2004 On the final leg of its eastbound trip. Train is coming up on a former spur into the South Bend sand And Gravel Company. Soon this train will arrive at the South Bend Transportation Center at South Bend Regional Airport. Right: Another shot of the same train.
Great
shot of a westbound South Shore train. Taken May 31, 2003 at "Rughy
Junction", west of Lydick, Indiana. Why is this location called Rugby Junction?
I have no clue, other than a sign someone painted on the old Michigan Central
line bridge abutment where I was seated when this train came by.
Left: On the final leg of its eastbound trip. Photo taken at Bendix Drive and Lincolnway in South Bend. Train is headed north and will eventually end up at South Bend Regional Airport. Right: South Shore eastbound arriving at 3:21, Dune Park Station, Chesterton, Indiana. Picture was taken on a cold winter's day, however, I do not remember the exact date.
Left: Westbound South Shore train headed to Chicago, July 18, 2004. Right: August 14, 2004. Westbound crossing Bendix Drive on its way to Chicago.
Taking full advantage of a warm spring day. Left and Right: Eastbound South Shore crossing Bendix Drive. This train will arrive at the South Bend Airport's station in a few moments.
Left and Right: About twenty minutes later I catch the westbound passenger along Westmoor Avenue. The former Bendix Plant is pictured in the background.
